MON, 9 NOV 2015 07:30 | KRG Cabinet

Erbil. Kurdistan Region, Iraq (cabinet.gov.krd) - Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani received a US congressional delegation led by Representatives Dana Rohrabacher and Steve King.

The US delegation expressed appreciation to the people, government, and Peshmerga forces in combating terrorism while facing severe budget constraints and accommodating an extraordinary number of refuge seekers.

The delegation said they would support in the United States continuing military assistance for the Peshmerga forces.

They said they submitted a draft resolution to the US Congress to officially recognise the crimes committed against Yazidi Kurds and Christians as genocide.

Prime Minister Barzani expressed his appreciation to the delegation, the coalition forces in general and United State in particular, for assisting the Peshmerga forces since the start of the war against ISIS. As the Peshmerga forces have demonstrated their effectiveness, he said, additional training and weaponry are needed for the Peshmerga forces to defeat ISIS.

He thanked the delegation for submitting a draft resolution calling for recognising genocide of Yezidis and Christians, saying it was one of the most important efforts of the KRG.

Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the need for continuing support to protect and assist refuge seekers. He said that due to the severe financial situation, much more support from the international community was needed.

Relations between Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, as well as with regional countries were also discussed.
